Statement

My first recollection of observing art making was probably watching my grandmothers making quilts. They were both gifted in creating patterns by selecting particular colors and shapes of fabric that were stitched together creating fine ornamental lines and wonderful compositions. They were my first art teachers in many more ways than I could have imagined. Since then I’ve had a multitude of mentors and artist friends that have influenced my artistic style.

Art is the vehicle through which I develop understanding of the world around me. It’s my opportunity to observe, learn and express my feelings about the environment and mindscape in which we live. When I begin a work of art it’s with questions, not answers that I have in mind. With a strong since of intuition for combining materials and a passion for art history, I approach my work as an experiment not unlike how a scientist would work.

The creative process of combining different materials to manifest ideas or develop imagery that communicates story lines intrigues me. I work hard at making art that goes beyond momentarily pleasing the eye. I want to make art that reaches the intellect and emotions, which brings far greater satisfaction. The ultimate goal is to create art that gives the observer and myself a glance at the world anew.
